Jonathan Glennie with his book at the EDDs
The fourth EDD edition is focused on the issue of whether aid to developing countries is appropriate.
An important issue, especially since Dambisa Moyo published her book “Dead Aid” last spring. The Zambian economist asserts aid is more harmful than beneficial for Africa because it generates corruption and keeps in power politicians with little interest in the well-being of their people according to the author.
In a similar vein, British author Jonathan Glennie published “The Trouble with Aid: Why Less Could Mean More for Africa” (Zed, 2008), he maintains that Western aid to Africa must be reduced gradually according to a set timetable with a deadline. Jonathan Glennie, who is also representative of Christian Aid in Colombia, opens the debate on the blog: Should developed countries stop their current aid to developing countries? Reduce it? Or on the contrary increase it? Are new aid structures necessary?
